H. P. McGowan is an award-winning composer, interdisciplinary artist, sound designer, game audio systems designer, and academic based in Toronto. His music has been described by colleagues as ‘contemplative’, ‘expressive’, and ‘imaginative’, often bringing attention to sparseness, fragility, and environment. His concert music has been influenced by the aesthetics of the Wandelweiser Collective, the Cagean tradition, and the Canadian artist Jack Chambers. His most recent music and research-creation projects make use of ‘just intonation’ and often borrow methods of composing from early music. His works and academic papers have been performed and presented internationally in the US, the UK, South Korea, Bulgaria, and Canada.
H. P. earned a Master of Music in Composition degree from the University of Ottawa in 2021, during which time his research and creative activities were funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).
In addition to his activities as a concert music composer, H. P. operates a successful music composition and sound design service for linear media. In 2020, he composed an award-winning score for Brittany Delgaty’s short film IOWÍSTO // THE COLD. He frequently collaborates with Cloud In The Sky Studios, Banfield Agency, Stiff, and other Canadian agencies performing composition and sound design services for clients such as Health Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada, Kinaxis, the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples, the Canadian Internet Registration Authority, and many other notable organizations.
H. P. co-founded Ensemble Allure, an interprovincial new music ensemble with chapters in Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax, and Toronto (ensembleallure.com). He serves as a board member at Ottawa New Music Creators.
H. P. is currently employed by Electronic Arts (EA) as an Audio Artist on the team behind the audio commentary system for EA’s flagship franchise, EA Sports FC (formerly FIFA).
